Tata Tea Gold Premium Assam
Assam is India's largest tea-producing region — a wide, humid valley along the Brahmaputra river where tea plants grow at low elevation and produce bold, full-bodied leaves. Tata Tea Gold is one of the country's most-loved daily-drinker brands, a CTC (crush-tear-curl) Assam blend optimized for making strong, satisfying tea with milk — whether that's a morning English-breakfast-style cup or the base for masala chai.
Why Assam — and why Tata Gold
Assam's tea character. Low-elevation, humid climate, larger leaves, higher polyphenol content. The result: strong, malty, almost chocolatey black tea with enough body to stand up to milk, sugar, and spices. This is the tea that built the "British breakfast tea" tradition — Indian Assam has been the backbone of English-style black tea for 150+ years.
Tata Tea is a household name. Part of the Tata Group (one of India's oldest conglomerates), Tata Tea has been blending tea since 1964 and is the second-largest tea brand in India. Tata Gold is their mid-premium line — better quality than everyday chai tea but still affordable.
CTC processing. Crush, tear, curl. Leaves are broken into small pellet-like granules that brew fast and strong. This is the right processing for chai — delicate whole-leaf Darjeelings get destroyed when boiled with milk, but CTC Assam thrives.
Flavor profile
- Malty richness — like a well-brewed dark beer without the alcohol
- Bold body — stands up to milk, sugar, and spices
- Slightly chocolatey — subtle cocoa notes in the finish
- Strong tannin structure — gives the tea a satisfying weight on the palate
- Deep amber-red liquor — the classic "breakfast tea" color
How to brew
Plain black tea (morning cup):
- 1 heaping tsp per 8 oz cup
- Boiling water (212°F — unlike green or white teas, Assam handles boiling)
- Steep 3-5 minutes (stronger the longer it steeps)
- Add milk and sugar to taste, or drink black
As chai base: See our What Is Chai Tea? for the full stovetop method. Quick version:
- Smash whole spices (cardamom, ginger, cinnamon, clove)
- Simmer spices in 1 cup water for 3 minutes
- Add 2 tsp of Tata Gold, simmer 1 more minute
- Add 1 cup milk + 2 tsp sugar, simmer 3 minutes
- Strain and serve
Iced tea: Steep double-strength (2 tsp per 8 oz), pour over ice, add lemon or mint.
Tata Gold vs. Wagh Bakri Masala Chai
Both are excellent Indian black teas but serve different needs:
| | Tata Tea Gold | Wagh Bakri Masala Chai | |---|---|---| | Plain tea | Excellent | Possible but less common | | Spices included | No (you add) | Yes (pre-blended) | | Prep time | Fast | Slightly longer | | Customization | Unlimited | Fixed spice blend | | Best for | Masala chai from scratch + plain black tea | Quick authentic chai |
If you want to experiment with your own spice blends (more cardamom, less clove, extra ginger), Tata Gold is the better base. If you want consistent chai in 5 minutes, Wagh Bakri Masala Chai is the pick.
Health profile
- Caffeine: ~45-55mg per 8 oz cup (roughly half a cup of coffee)
